This one started with a fern and a pinstripe and the feeling that the two belonged together.

The fern is reversed out of a loose watercolour wash — pale, almost ghostly, the way a botanical illustration looks when the light catches it just right. There's something quietly beautiful about that reversal. The negative space does the work. The wash does the rest, blooming and bleeding the way watercolour always does when you give it a little room.

Then the pinstripe comes in, and everything clicks. Fine, deliberate, running clean through the softness of the ground. It's the detail that makes the whole thing — the way a well-chosen tie pulls together a jacket you've had for twenty years. Tailored without being stiff. Classic without being safe.
